Abstract:
The hypolipidemic activity of the three doses of lyophilized fruit pulp of Guyabano were evaluated in atherogenic dietinduced albino rats. Pre-test post-test experimental design was conducted by comparing the TC, TG, LDL-c, HDL-c, and AIP. Bioassay findings show that, the Guyabano fruit pulp can control, in a dose-dependent manner, the increase in TC, TG, LDL-c, AIP, and decrease in HDL-c caused by high fat and high cholesterol diet. Histopathological analysis of the liver, heart, and blood vessels also revealed that the fruit pulp was effective in curtailing the deposition of fats, implying its potential ability to prevent the occurrence of hyperlipidemia. Phytochemical screening confirmed that the fruit pulp contained condensed tannins, polyphenols, reducing sugars, fixed oils, proteins, saponins, unsaturated steroids, 2- deoxysugars and flavonoids potentially responsible for its hypolipidemic property.
